“I’ve tried medication, therapy, and alcohol, but none of that really worked for me. What helped me get started on the way home (to healing) was writing, because once it’s written down it’s no longer stuck in the back of your head spinning wildly through your mind. “ – Ron Capps

Ron Capps was a soldier for 25 years serving in Kosovo, Rwanda, Afghanistan, Iraq and Sudan. He just wrote a memoir called Seriously Not All Right about his severe PTSD from the trauma he experienced in war.

What drew me to his story, in addition to his incredible experiences, honesty and bravery is that he embraced writing his story in order to heal from it. He now teaches writing for healing to other veterans.

I, too, took the trauma left with me from not only growing up in an emotional volatile family but then the subsequent murder of my mother by my father to the pages of my journal. And with my first poem my healing began. Then came a collection of poems (filled with rage, sex, violence). Then the sweet touch of spirit came in once I released all that emotion that I had suppressed before the writing.  Then came the development and performance of my critically successful one-person show, My Brooklyn Hamlet.

Next up: I’ve been guided to help other people, just like me and you, heal by getting in touch with what’s really going on for them. The vehicle will be writing your personal story. I’ll be able to use all the counseling skills I learned during my two year master’s degree program in Spiritual Psychology and all the coaching skills I have used with my private clients since 2008.

Reading about Ron Capps and his extraordinary healing journey feels like a confirmation that I should continue full speed ahead with this next stage of my journey…spreading healing through guiding people to write their own stories and sharing what worked for me.

Blessings and love.
