I just received this from Gretchen Shaw at The National Coalition Against Domestic Violence.

Stopping Domestic Violence is so near and dear to my heart because my beloved mother was shot and killed by my father. I’ve devoted my life to helping this cause by bringing awareness to it and spreading forgiveness.

Here’s Gretchen’s invitation:

October 26th is my birthday.
Please help me celebrate by taking action to help NCADV!

Dear Friends,
Today, October 26th, is my 39th birthday. Instead of creating a birthday wish through Facebook to raise money for NCADV and in honor of Domestic Violence Awareness Month, I’m asking you all to take action on the items below. Help me support this great cause and the organization I dearly love by participating in one or more of the actions below.
Thank you!
Gretchen Shaw
NCADV Special Projects Coordinator

October 26, 2010   Shop For Good’s Featured Charity: National Coalition Against Domestic Violence

Stop the abuse: learn the facts about domestic violence.

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month (DVAM).  This month-long event evolved from the Day of Unity in October 1984 conceived by the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence.  The intent was to connect advocates across the nation who were working to end violence against women and their children.  The Day of Unity soon became an entire week devoted to a range of activities conducted at local, state and nationwide levels.  The activities were as diverse as the program sponsors, but shared common themes: mourning those who have died because of domestic violence, celebrating those who have survived, and connecting those who work to end violence.

Examining the Prevalence of Domestic Violence Among LBTQQ Latinas in Chicago: A National Model

Join the webinar here.
In 2007, Amigas Latinas, an organization that serves the Latina lesbian, bisexual, transgender, queer and questioning (LBTQQ) community of Chicago, conducted an extensive community-wide survey, Project Latina: Discovering All of Us, to document and make visible the unique life experiences and challenges of Latina LBTQQ women in the Chicagoland area. About 300 participants from diverse backgrounds completed the survey. In this workshop presenters will describe some of the most significant findings of the survey related to same-sex domestic violence among LBTQQ Latinas, and learn about the community action initiatives created as a result of the survey findings. Casa de Esperanza will join Amigas Latinas in this webinar to offer an overview of their services designed to support Latina Lesbian survivors. Casa de Esperanza’s CEO will comment on their training tool/video “My Girlfriend Did It.”

Presenters: Lu Rocha & Dayi Peguero, Amigas Latinas
Patti Tototzintle, CEO Casa de Esperanza
Moderator: Heidi Notario-Smull
